Six weeks done. September is over. It's time to start looking ahead to see who is in good shape and who has work to do to qualify for the Idaho 1A state football playoffs.
Up next, District III.
Division 1 Western Idaho Conference
Bids: 2
In the Mix:
Honestly, everyone. They've only had one week of conference play in the WIC so it's too early to rule anyone in or anyone out. However, Wilder (3-1 overall, 1-0 WIC) took a big first step with a hard-fought home win over Rimrock (3-3 overall, 0-1 WIC) on Friday. Another home win this Friday over Horseshoe Bend (0-3 overall, 0-0 WIC) and the Wildcats will be officially upgraded from "In the Mix" to "Looking Good."
On the flip side of that coin, the loser of Friday's game Notus (2-4 overall, 0-1 WIC) between the Pirates and Rimrock will have to be downgraded to "Mathematically Alive" The winner will even their conference ledger at 1-1 while the loser will be 0-2 - and potentially two games back - with just two conference games to play.
Idaho City (3-3 overall, 1-0 WIC) has this Friday off before hosting Wilder on October 13, so a lot could be somewhat resolved by the final whistle two weeks from now. Another potential factor - Idaho City's last two games are on the road and no doubt Head Coach Jason Roeber doesn't want to be in must-win mode away from home two weeks in a row.
Based on results to date, Idaho City and Wilder are your early leaders at the quarter pole. But, to stick with the horse-racing analogy, everyone knows how much can change over the final three-quarters of a race. Anyone could be in, anyone could be out. Gonna be a fun final four weeks in the Western Idaho Conference.
Division 2 Long Pin Conference
Bids: 2
Looking Good
Tri-Valley (5-0 overall, 0-0 LPC): Consider this - the Titans swept the Division 1 WIC in non-conference play, winning all five games by a cumulative score of 296-34. You read that right. Two hundred and ninety six to thirty four. They've already scored 66, 68, and 70 points in a game. Some suggest head coach Bob Johnson was trying to send a message to the rest of the state with these outcomes. Message received.
Garden Valley (5-0 overall, 1-0 LPC): The Wolverines may not have the same sex appeal, so to speak, as some of their LPC conference mates thusfar but 5-0 is 5-0, especially when four of the five are against Division 1 opponents. The Wolverines are good, make no mistake, and are not a fluke. Garden Valley's season-ending game at Tri-Valley on October 28 seems a near-certainty to be for a playoff berth, if not an outright conference championship.
Salmon River (5-1 overall, 1-0 LPC): The defending state champs certainly look capable of a repeat with uber-talented junior RB/LB Canyon Harper leading the way. The Savages may not have been as overwhelming thusfar as Tri-Valley but Charlie Shepherd's team has been there and knows how to get it done when the lights are brightest. Scary to think that one of these three teams will miss the playoffs.
Mathematically Alive
Cascade (0-4 overall, 0-1 LPC): Head coach Adam Mapp's team has struggled on offense this season (16 points in four games) but can still be a factor by continuing to work hard over the final four weeks of the season. They've already got one strike against them, so a win at Garden Valley (October 13) or at Tri-Valley (October 20) is a must if the Ramblers want to claw their way into the playoff picture.
Out
Council (0-4 overall, 0-1 LPC): The Lumberjacks had to cancel their first two games and, due to injuries combined with low numbers, have dropped to a JV schedule to finish out the season. It is an unfortunate turn for head coach Dan Shumway and his team.
