An idea that brings opportunity

Kudos to Cameron Andersen and the staff at Gooding High School, near Twin Falls, for hosting the 2017 Southern Idaho Showcase Camp.

The concept – there are a lot of good football players who can’t afford to travel all over the place to camps and combines. So, instead of sending the kids to the coaches, the SISC folks are bringing the coaches to the kids.

Thirteen college-level programs will be represented on July 6 in an event that we can only hope catches on like a brush fire. For kids at the 8-man level, it may be their ONLY shot to viably get themselves in front of college coaches. You can only do so much on film, here’s a chance to go out there in front of the coaches and pass the “eye test.” These kids deserve that opportunity.

If this camp is successful, we should see it emulated elsewhere around the state soon. There are some kids from north Idaho scheduled to participate in the camp, but how many more would participate if there was a comparable showcase in – for sake of example – Post Falls or Kellogg along Interstate 90?

This is a great idea and we’re rooting for all kinds of Idaho kids, not just the 8-man competitors, to earn college opportunities because of camps like this.
