Confirming what multiple sources had told Idaho8Man earlier this spring, the Idaho Statesman reported this week that Greenleaf Friends Academy, located just outside of Caldwell in District III, will not field its own football team in 2017.
The school will join with nearby Wilder, located five miles away, for football in the 1A Division 1 Western Idaho Conference.
The Grizzlies did not field a football team in 2016. The team last played in 2015 in an unusual co-operative agreement with Rimrock High School, located nearly 80 miles away outside of Mountain Home.
GFA athletic director Larry Taylor told the Statesman that the goal is for the school to field its own team when enrollment numbers increase. Until then, Taylor says, the school will continue to seek IHSAA-approved co-operative agreements for athletes who wish to play football. The athletes who choose to play this season will compete for head coach Kyle DalSoglio and the Wildcats, who won six games last season and reached the 1A Division 1 state playoffs.
